…by people lamenting the loss of Paget Brewster from Criminal Minds. Clearly I need to get out into the real world more…but this essay is stopping me.
It’s annoying though. Don’t get me wrong, I love Emily Prentiss - she’s my favourite character - and I love Paget Brewster but after the whole extra year on her contract thing I thought that we were just to assume that when the contract was up she was gone. And this, I think, is a good thing. For a couple of reasons:
1. I LOVE funny Paget Brewster - she does serious REALLY well but she does funny like no one else. I WANT to see her go on to do more funny things. Have you SEEN Andy Richter controls the universe? Or listened to The Thrilling Adventure Hour podcast? As much as I love Criminal Minds (and it does have it’s funny moments) it’s NOT a funny show.
2. I don’t think that there is that much left for the character of Emily Prentiss - she was this mysterious woman who appeared seemingly from no where, she speaks all these languages, she kept herself very much to herself. There were snippets of information - the mother, the pregnancy - but, generally, she played her cards very close to her chest…then the return of Doyle happened and suddenly we knew everything. If I was an actress, I’d be disappointed because the Doyle storyline was so big and all consuming that it doesn’t leave much else for Emily. I think they should have had Doyle kill Emily and leave it at that.
I’m not trying to upset anyone and I know that the fandom has a LOT of feelings about Emily/Paget that need to be expressed (and where better to express them?!) and on the whole the posts have been supportive of Paget but I’d just like a few more “Yay! Time for funny Paget doing new and wonderful things” post.
Just a thought.
